THE JURY SYSTEM.
MR JUSTICE CONNOLLY EXPRESSES HIS OPINION.
(per fbess association.)
Auckland, February 11 . At the conclusion of a case at the Supreme Court, Mr Justice Connolly made some very pointed remarks about the jury.
The case was one in which a man was charged with stealing £5 from a fellow lodger. The jury, after about an hour's retirement, returned to Court with a verdict of not guilty. " I had occasion during my summing up," remarked hi? Honor, " to observe that trial by jury was becoming a fatce, I think this jury has proved my words. A clearer case was never tried. It iB really becoming ridiculous to try prisoners at all."
His Honor then discharged the prisoner, and, turning to tbe row of jurymen, remarked: "And I wish I could discharge you also."
