Christchurch, February 10. The criminal sessions started this morning. The calender is light, including an indictment for attempting to bribe a Crown witness against George Mumford, late master of the yacht Ariadne. THe latter arose out of -the Ariadne] case. Mumford attempted to induce Mrs Downing to contradict her former evidence and go over on to his side. Joseph Mulligan, for theft of a portmanteau, was sentenced to nine months. Harry Smith and Arthur Walsh, for assault and robbery, received nine months each ; Mary Joyce, theft, twelve months; James Tucker, horse stealing, three years ; George Mumford, for bribing a witness in the Ariadne yacht case, six months, to be concurrent with his present sentence for casting away the vessel.

At the Supreme Court to-day, Archibald Fairbaim was sentenced to two years for horse-stealing. Hori Piriki, for the same offence, received a similar sentence. Kereama Ropita, a Maori, was found guilty of attempting to carnally Know a girl under 12 years of age, and was remanded for sentence. Mika Renata Pura, a Maori, was found guilty of indecently assaulting a native girl at Rata Flat, near Fordell. Sentence was deferred until Wednesday. Jofin Kinnard, for breaking and entering and stealing at Matamau, was sentenced to one year
