BOKOUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Borough Counoil was held last evening. Present : H's Worship the Mayor (Mr G. W. Tayler), Crs W. H. McGarry, Fitch, Graves, Thomson, C. Potts, Blackhall, Runcirnan, Allan, Yon Stunner.

ANGLOPHOBIA.

A letter was read from the Premier, thanking the Council for resolution condemning action of German press, and stating that the resolution had been forwarded to the Colonial Seoretary.

NOXIOUS WEEDS.

P. H. Pease wrote re noxious weeds, strongly urging the Counoil to take action to stop the spread of same.

Tbe report of the Works and Streets Committee (in reference to a previous letter of Mr Pease's) was read. This recommended that the matter be held over unlil receipt of Professor Kirk's report. The Mayor considered the question of importance, but the Council had no power to act. The ragwort was worse than the dock. He moved that Mr Pease be written to, stating that the Counoil had no power, but urging settlers to try their best to eradioate the weeds. Cr Blackhall suggested that Mr Pease be referred to the Farmers' Union, who were taking the matter up. Cr McGarry Baid the particular seotion referred to by Mr Pease was very bad, and wanted attending to.

The motion was seconded by Cr Blackhall, and carried.

NEW BOAD.

A letter from Henderson and Lowe re new road connecting sections with existing road was referred to the Works Committee.

RATEABLE VALUE.

A letter was read from the ValuerGeneral, in reply to a letter from the Council, stating that the rateable capital value of the borouph of Eltham is as follows :— Total capital value, £109,688; less exempt properties, £3,599; rateable capital value, £106,089.

LIBBABY.

E. A. Osmond, as Secretary of the Library Committee, wrote handing over £5 Is 3d as result of concert in aid of a library, and urging the holding of another concert, which he would undertake to arrange.

The Mayor suggested giving the committee a subsidy of £ for £, and allowing them to manage the library. It was in the Council's right to strike a rate of Id in the £ for the purpose.

FIRE BRIGADE. E. Mills, secretary of proposed fire brigade, wrote urging tbe Counoil to lease a manual engine from the Hawera Brigade. The Hawera Brigade will be asked to state at what price they will lease the engine and hose by the year. (The Mayor —Cr McGarry.)

The secretary of the Brass Band wrote, stating that the band bad been disbanded, and that instruments were at the service of the Counoil for £8. The old members would join a band if tho Oounoil would form one and appoint a bandmaster. Cr McGarry thought necessaries were wanted before luxuries.

A letter will be sent to the seoretary that the Counoil cannot entertain the matter at present. (The Mayor -Cr Potts.) • NIOITTBOIL. The Counoil went into committee to oonsidcr nightsoil matters.

WOBKS AND STREETS OOMMITTKH. The Committee reported that no tender be accepted for nightsoil roading, and that tho matter of providing depot be referred baok to nightsoil committee. Adopted.

ACCOUNTS. Several accounts were passed for payment.

WATEB AND DRAINAGE.

Or Fitoh moved, according to notice, that a loan of £20,000 be raised undor the Loans to Looal Bodies Act for water supply. He explained that this would only be ear-marking tbe amount, and the Counoil was not bound to take it up. It was simply in the nature of an overdraft. Or Blackball seconded the motion. Ho said from statements made by engineers of experience Eltham oould have a water supply laid dewn for £1200 a mile, and the water oould be got at a distanoe of three miles. He was entirely in favor of a loan up to £20,000. The motion was carried unanimously. INSPECTOB.

Cr Pottß waa appointed Building Inspecter.

SHIFTING BUILDINGS.

The Mayor mentioned the damage occasioned by the shifting of a building the other day, and also the block to traffic He moved, That no building be removed in future without Council's permission Seconded by Or Graves and carried. The Oounoil adjourned. f
