ALLEGED ATTEMPTED MURDER.

A man named Jos. Smith, a brickmaker, was arrested at Feilding on Saturday on a charge of attempted murder. He had been living away from home recently. Early in the morning Mrs Smith's neighbors heard a woman screaming. Dr Charlton was summoned, and on examination found that Mrs Smith was suffering from a severe wound on the left side of the head. This looked suspicious, and the doctor at once communicated with the police. Another surgeon was called in, and the police were advised to take the woman's depositions. As a result, Smith was arrested, and charged before Mr Graham, J.P., with attempting to murder his wife by striking her on the head with an axe. The accused was remanded for eight days. Bail was refused.
