His Worship stated that in this case he believed that they should do all they could Q to -encourage the townspeople to build j. good, 'substantial buildings, as long as it j entailed nolods to themselves (the Council). fl He thought that Mr Sullivan's request for t the same amount as he paid the Council was a reasonable one, though there might c be a slight amount for depreciation, say j. 5y 0 . His Worship said there was one matter he wished to bring up, viz., the necessity of metalling Princes street to its full width, from South road to Collins street. At thß present time, whenever a vehicle or horse took the side of the road, there was nothing but clouds of dust. He believed there was more traffic on that street than any other in the town, even High street. Cr Fennell suggested that Union street should also be completed. . The Mayor also pointed out that High street was the only metalled street connecting several of the other cross streets, and suggested that Wellington street should be metalled, which would relieve a good deal of the traffic in High street. He believed the work had been previously estimated at about £80. He suggested that they should get an estimate of the cost of doing the two streetß from the foreman. Cr Morrissey said he thought Borne of the older streets had a better claim, and (hat a lot of money had been spent on Princes street. He suggested that Caledonia street, where every section was occupied, had a prior right. His Worship replied he would also like to see Caledonia Btreet included, as in the winter it would doubtless be in a bad state. He suggested that the cost of metalling Caledonia street be also included. Agreed to. Cr Haughey mentioned that he wished to secure a portion of the borough yard, and also to have a small right-of-way through. The Mayor said it would be best to let it by tender or public auction, and then Cr Haughey could compete with the rest of the public. Later, on consideration, he did not see why they could not arrange to meet Cr Haughey in this matter. He moved, That Messrs Bobbins, Fennell, and Parkin be a oommittee to go into it, and that Cr Haughey be allowed the use of it in the meantime. BATE COLLECTOB. Hiß Worship stated that the way the borough was increasing necessitated that they should get some one to collect the rates, as there was already more work than the staff could get through. They were also requiring an Inspeotor of Nuisances, as now that Mr Howard was Dog Registrar he 1 had more than he could get through. They also wanted a pound-keeper.
