WANGANUI V. TARANAKI.

THURSDAY'S PLAY.

The second day's play commenced shortly after 10.30 on Thursday morning in fine weather, with a stiff southerly wind blowing. The wicket was somewhat worn, but 'still in fair playing condition. Wanganui went in for their second innings with 201 runs to make to win, buc only managed to score 38, Webby (sub.) being the highest scorer with 9 to his credit. Bayly and McCarthy bowled throughout, and did some good work, as the analysis shows. The fielding \yas again very good all round. Special mention should be made of the excellent fielding of tho two subs, playing for the visitors, viz , Webby and A'Court — tbe former catching both Crawshaw and McCarthy, when each batsman was well set, and looked like making big scores. The wicket-keeping was also satisfactory. Gordon, for Wanganui, all through the game, and Robertson and Glasgow for Taranaki, the former on the first day, and the latter on the second day— each did good service. McCarthy's score included one six and two threes.

A curious incident in connection with the above match was that Braund did not appear to resume his innings on Thursday, haying, it was stated, gone off to play in a match at InglewoocL

Wanganui were not "in it " at any stage of the game, but it is to the credit of their skipper that he came with what men he could get rather than break an engagement.

Taranaki cricketers will note with satisfaction that Mr B. McCarthy has been selected to play for the North Island against the South.
