ELTHAM.

(from our resident agent.)

Some time ago an 'effort was made to form a mounted rifle corps in Eltham, but a sufficient number could not be obtained. Since then the idea originated to form an Eltham seotion of the Stratford Mounted Rifles, and Mr D. L. Blennerhassett took the matter in hand. As a result, Captain Liardet, Sergeant-Major Mackay, Sergeant Yickery, and Dr. Carberry, of the Stratford corps, came to Eltham last night, when those willing to join were measured and enrolled. About 20 men joined, and several more names have been handed in. Colonel Payne assisted in the enrolling of the men. Captain Liardet said he was very pleased with the men, all being young, strong, and healthy. For the benefit of the recruits, the corps would hold parades in Eltham on nights suitable to the majority. Sometimes the Eltham section would go to Stratford, and at times the Stratford section would visit Eltham. Captain Liardefc explained at length the duties and responsibilities .of the men.

A one-time oil store in Bridge street was shifted yesterday in order to clear the site for the new Bank of New Zealand. February 5.
