ELTHAM.

There was a large gathering in tbe Athenteum last evening, when a farewell social was tendered to Messrs and Mesdames T. O. and H. Stanners. who are leaving Eltham to settle at Whangarei. His Worship the Mayor (Mr G. W. Tayler) presided, and apologised for the absence of Mr Boddie. A nice littlo programme was gone through, including soDgs by Misses Boddie, Neilson, and F. Simpson, duet by Mrs and Miss May Neilson, and Mr G. Speak m an, and pianoforte solos by Mr Adrian Moulton. Between two of the items, the Mayor, after an eulogistic speech, presented Mr and Mrs T. G. Stanners with a silver egg- cruet, half-dozen silver-plated knives and forks, and to Mr Stanners a silvermounted pipe. To Mr H. Scanners His Worship handed a massive salad bowl, and a beautifully-chased silver teapot. The Mayor hoped their guests would return and settle in Eltbam, when they could rest assured they would get a warm welcome. (Laud applause.)

Mr T. O. Stanners thanked those present for their kindness in being present, and for the handsome presents, upon which be would always look with pride. He was proud to find he bad so many friends here, and wished Eltham a prosperous future. Mr H. Stanners briefly returned thanks.

Later in the programme, Mr F. A. Moore, on behalf of tbe Oddfellows Lodge, presented Me T. C. Stanners with a P.G. regalia m a token of the esteem in which he was held by the members.

Mr Stanners said nothing the Lodge could have given him would be so prized as the present just made. (Applause.) At the close of the concert, tbe committee handed refreshments round the hall, and after this a dance was held, at which there was a largo attendance. Mr A. Hansen was M.C.

The presents were obtained from Mr H. G. Payne, and are yery handsome.Feb. 4. •
