AN OLD-TIME WARRIOR.

The Napier Telegraph reports that one of New Zealand's oldtime warriors is now on a visit to Napier, in the person of Mujor Charles Westrupp. He joined Yon Tempsky's Forest Rangers in 1863, and was soon after commissioned as an ensign in that corps; was promoted to lieutenant early in 1864, and served under Major Yon Tempsky in the Waikato until the middle of 1865, wheii he was promoted to a oaptaincy and took a company of Forest Rangers round to Waiapu (East Cape), where he did good service under the late Major Jas. Fraser and Captain R. Biggs throughout the East Coast campaign. Captain Wesfcrupp was present at the attack on Pukematie, and the taking of Hunga-hunga-Toroa, Waerangahika, and iha fighting in Wairca in 1866-7. After the murder of Major Biggs in November, 1868 (Poverty Bay Massacre), he was placed in command of the Poverty Bay district, and gave orders for the pursuit of Te Kooti by the Napier natives under Captain Gascoigne, who defeated the rebels at Mangakaretu, killing sixty-three on the spot, Te Kooti being amongst the wounded, who retreated to Ngatipa. Captain Wesferupp now received his majority, and was left in command of the Poverty Bay district. He shortly after retired from the service, and settled down as a sheepfarmer. Major Westrupp has been for the last eight years living in Australia. We understand he is anxious to get a command in the next New Zealand contingent for Africa. He speaks highly of the stamp of men thai, the Eighth Contingent is composed of. Major Westrupp's old friends will bo pleased to learn that he is in good trim.
