Several important business transactions have taken place in our village during the last week. Mr J. L. Harwood has sold his interest in the firm of J. L. Harwood and Co. to W. Gruar and Co., who took possession on the Ist instant. Messrs J. Robertson and F. Cowern have sold their property in the township to Mr Guy, who has started a general smithy and wheelwright business. Mr P. J. O'Keefe has purchased Mr Moore's interest in the shop adjoining the chemist's, and intends to start tailoring iv all its branches.

I noticed Mr Robertson busily engaged in putting in the foundations of the new shop which Mr F. W. Wilkie is having erected on his corner seotion on the Eltham and Manaia roads.

The lantern lecture by the Rev. Mr Rawnsley, and farce by the Manaia Dramatic Club, held on Thursday evening in aid of the district funds, was but poorly attended, the takings only amounting to £2, the reason being no doubt owing to the want of advertising, and future entertainers will do well to notice that to be assured of a good house at Eaponga nothing can reach the residents so easily or cheaply as a liberal advertisement in the Star.

The Horticultural Show, which is fix.cd to take place on Thursday, 20th inst., premises to eolipse all' shows hitherto held at Eaponga. Applications for space are being received from nurserymen which will be provided by the erection of a large marquee adjoining the hall. At the meeting held on Tuesday last the judges were appointed, also the following ladies and gentleman were appointed stewards :—: — Classes 1 and 2, Messrs J. Gibson. C. E. Betts ; olass 3, Messrs F. W. Wilkie, G. Holland, C. Bates, A. J. Herbert'; olass 4, Mr R. Mellor ; classes 5, 6, 7, Mesdamea Frethey, Gibson, Robertson, Cowern ; olass 8, Mesdames E. Holland, Maclean; olass 9, Mr and Mrs O. Walker.

The Ladies Committee meeting was fixed for Friday next, at 2 p.m. Mr McGruire is to be asked, to open the Show.

The poll for the surface drainage loan will be held on Wednesday.

The Pollard Opera Co. have booked the Opera House for three nights, viz, March 21st, 22nd, and 24th.

Three members of the Wanganui Biver Trust Board have come to the conclusion that it is a waste of money to try. and make the Tangarakau river a tourist route or a highway for commerce.

At the Police Court on Monday, before Mr H. J. C. Coutts, J.P., William Charles May was charged with having failed to provide maintenance for his reputed illegitimate child. On the application of Sergeant Bernard, the caße was remanded to Napier.

There is a proposal that the Wellington Single |Tax League and the Wellington Trade and Labour Council should combine for certain political ends, and among items suggested for consideration are (1) State control of currency, (2) increase in land and income tax, and probate duty and reductions of duties on necessaries of life.
