EIGHTH CONTINGENT.

DEPARTURE OF NORTH ISLAND BATTALION.

Auckland, February 1. The 'northern section of the Eighth Contingent received an enthusiastic send-off to-day. The weather was perfect, and the function was witnessed by enormous crowds. Farewell speeches were delivered by the Mayor, Mr Seddon, General Babington, and Colonel Davies.

The Premier said after the Ninth Contingent had been despatched the equipment of a tenth would be commenced, though he hoped it would not

be necessary to send it. It was only by pouring in troops that the war could be brought to a close. It is officially announced that the southern portion of the Eighth Contingent leaves Christchurch next Saturday.
