FRENCH DISPERSES FOUCHE'S COMMANDO.

THE WAR.

GERMAN FEELING OF A BETTER

CHARACTER.

London, February 1. Lieut.. General French has dispersed Fouche's commando in north-east Cape Colony, capturing 26.

Major Driscoll captured seventeen, including Field-Coraets Venter and Grobelaar, at Makawsdrift. Grobelaar subsequently died of wounds.

Menwindt's commando attacked Col. Dv Moujin's column, and a sharp action followed. Dv Moulin bad eight of the Sussex Regiment killed and eleven wounded.

Colonel Wilson's assailants, on the 25th, numbered 900. A British advanced party of 200 were surrounded by a heavy fire. They charged through, and regained Wilson, who fought along fourteen miles of ridges to Frankfort, and with difficulty escaped being surrounded. Maritz is storing great quantities of supplies in Bushman's-land, a dry, waterless country in north-west Cape" Colony, and full of military obstacles. Received February Q, 5.5 a.m.

London, February 1. Professor Dilbruck, the historian, has altered his views regarding the war. He disproves the Boer stories, and declares there is an increasing disposition in Germany to recognise the gallantry and humanity of the British troops. He severely condemns Miss Hobhouse.

A Blue Book iust issued foreshadows Lord Milnor's policy, which will be one of kindness and firmness to the natives, while compelling them to observe contracts. It also shows a determination to suppress drinking. The Westminster Gazette says that the precedent for Mr See's exaction of a commission on payments to troopers is a very slender one. Probably the colonies would not have thought worse of Great Britain if the Government had refused to pay.
