CRICKET.

ENGLISHMEN v. NEW SOUTH WALES.

Received February 1, 5.25 p.m. Sydney, February 1.

The match was continued to-day, in splendid weather, and on an excellent wicket, there being a large attendance. The partnership between Gregory and Noble was dissolved after eight had been added to the overnight score, Noble making a bad stroke off Jessop into Lilley's hands. Gregory closed a fine display in an unsatisfactory way. Clarke hit out to McGahey, who checked, but did not hold it. Gregory ran half way up the pitch, and Quaife followed up, and got the ball back to the bowler. Gregory retired after a faultless innings, in which he hit fifteen fours, having batted 3 hours and 48 minutes. Others did little. Scores are as follows :—: — New South Wales. — Ist Innings. C. Gregory, b Braund 45 Hopkins, c Jones, b Jessop ... 40 Trumper, 1.b.w., b Braund ... 35 Poidevin, b Gunn 1 S. Hay ward and Maclaren commenced the innings of the Englishmen. With the task set them, they opened slowly, but after twenty minutes warmed up, and rattled 50 on the board in as many minutes. The bowling pot quite tied up, and lacked " devil," Noble getting practically no work on. Maclaren j brought up his century in two hours ten minutes, and received a great ovation. Hay ward continued to bat splendidly, though he scored less rapidly than his skipper. Maclaren gave a chance when his score reached 106, but Trumper misjudged the direction of the ball, and failed to run up to it. The second century waß reached in two hours thirty - nine minutes. Hay ward was cheered, he having recorded a chanceless century in three hours. Both batsmen proceeded to slash the bowling about tremendously, and piled on the next fifty very rapidly. When stumps were drawn for the day, England had lost no wickets for 255. Hay ward, not out 115 Maclaren, not out 136 Extras 4 Total 255 Hayward and Maclaren's performance for the first wicket constitutes a record for Australia.
