THE GOVERNORS EXTENDED TERM.

In reference to the extension of Lord Ranfudy's term of effice at the requeefc of the Ministry, the opinion of authorities on constitutional pro cedure would be interesting. If it is constitutional for Ministers to use their influence to get an extension of time for a Governor whom they approve, is ifc not equally open to them to pull the strings in a different direction if the Governor does not happen to have pleased them ? The Governor in such a caee would be placed in ft new aad undesirable relation with tho Ministry of the day, and we cannot conceive anything more likely to shake confidence in the indepenoVnce of His Majesty's representative than the existence of the possibility of his being under a compliment to one particular patty in the community. With the House of Representatives under the domination of the caucus, the Legislative Council within the grasp of the Executive, the Executive the mere Cabinet furniture of the Premier, and the Governor not exempt from Ministerial patronage, where are the checks and balances against autocracy which are supposed to be the safety and glory of the constitution ?
