PROMOTION.

We congratulate Major Barblett and his family on his promotion. The announcement, if it puts out of date inscriptions prepared for this eveuing, will at any rate add interest to the gathering. Being a Taranaki boy, born and trained, Major Bartlett's successful career as a soldier would in any case be a satisfaction to Taranakians ; it is the more so when it is known that superior cffieer3 have over and over again asserted that by his own merit he has riseu, and that at any rate until recently his services with the Fir3t Contingent had not been duly recognised. There will be general fatiefaction, too, with tbe further promotion of Colonel Davies. All good wishes for their future will go with the Eighth Contingent, but naturally in a special degree with Toranaki (fficcre and men.
