Wkstport, January 27.

The preliminary inquiry into the stranding of the barque Alexandra was held this evening. i'eter Andersen, master of the Alex andra, said he wore the ship because the vessel would not stay when in ballast. In the run across he did not take the ourrent into consideration. From the two courses pioked off on the cbarr, he could only give it as his opinion that the current must have been the cause of putting the ship about one pomt out of the course, E.£S., set by him.

Evidence mainly corroborative of that given by the master was given by the first and second mates, the deck boy, and the sailmaker.

At the Police Court, Harry Hart was charged with attempting to defraud by means of a valueless cheque for £53 16s on the Bank of New Zealand. ,

The acoused pleaded not guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
