HANDICAPS.
For some considerable time past (writes " Pluto " to the Wellington Post) both the Australian and New Zealand sporting press have agitated in favor of the appointment of stipendiary stewards at race meetings, but so far their exertions have borne no fruit. If "ever the necessity for such a reform presented itself it was at the close of yesterday's races, when the stewards were summoned to discuss a certain question, but npne of our " amateur " stewards could be found. Comment is needless.
