THE ARMY CONTRACT.

The Premier is to be congratulated on his early protest against the army contract in South Africa being let with so little consideration for colonial interests, and apparently with so much for the argentine producers. The colonies' splendid patriotism has been praised by the War Office, but it surely deserves something more than mere words, and as the colonies are quite capable of supplying meat in large quantities they should have been given first call. The announcement that Rhodes, Beit, and such men — who had far better been allowed to remain out of sight in the present crisis— have obtained large interests in the contract, and have virtually ignored the colonies, is a cold douche to the warm Imperial feeling which has of late been growing. Facts accumulate in support of the contention that the commercial interests of the Empire must be considered as well as its military interests, and that indeed the two are interdependable.
