MR SEDDON AND A GOVERNORSHIP.

In connection with the rumoured possibility of "King Dick, of Maoriland," being appointed first Governor of the Orange River Colony, it may be noted that there are only three comparatively recent precedents of residential colonists being promoted to Governorship. That of Sir Frederick Weld is particularly to the point, because he, like Mr Seddon, was Premier of New Zealand. Several years after achieving the Premiership of New Zealand he was appointed Governor of Western Australia, subsequently representing the Queen .in Tasmania and the Straits Settlements. Sir John Thurston, after having been the head of the Government in Fiji, under the rule of the Thakombau, died Governor of the group after it had become a British Crown Colony, and Sir Ambrose Shea, a native of Newfoundland, and the Speaker of its Legislative Assembly for six years, was appointed Governor of the Bahamas in 1887, and has proved one of the most capable colonial governors ever appointed.
