Wellington, January 25. The Government is calling for tenders for a steam service to South Africa. The available subsidy is ;£30,000, and the contract must be for three years, steamers to be of not less than 2000 or more than 4000 tons, and fitted with refrigerators. Accommodation for passengers, mails, and live stock is necessary, and the vessels must have a speed of not less than ten knots. Preference will be given to those having more. Bates of freight are fixed by the Government as follows : Wheat and flour, 30s per ton ; barley, 32s 6d ; oats, 355 ; bran, 40s ; hay, etc., 37s 6d per ton of 50 cubic feet; potatoes 40s in sacks, 37s 6d in boxes per ton of 50 cubic feet ; frozen meat and dairy produce at current summer rates ruling between New Zealand and London ; other goods at not less than current rates between New Zealand and London.
