' (PBE PRBSS ASSOCIATION ) Wellington, January 23. Owing to continual rain to-day at the Trentham Rifle Range, the Wellington Rifle Association Meeting could not take place.
Auckland, January 23. The City Council has selected Oakleigh Park (near the Avondale Asylum, about four miles from the city) for the city abattoirs.
Hokitika, January 23. The dam of the Great Woodstock dredging claim, in Shenaoroah Creek, broke away during the night, stranding the pontoons. The accident is not of a Berious nature, as the pontoonß can be refloated easily while the creek is high. Tavbanga, January 22. Natives here are indignant at the refusal of their countrymen lor the Eighth Contingent, after the insults of the German Press to their King and country. A. large Ngaeterangi meeting is to be held at Hori Ng6« tai's settlement this week to protest against the German insults offered to our King and to the New Zealand contingents. The natives wish to uphold the position of the Hon. James Carroll, Native Minister, and intend submitting through that gentleman to the Governor an offer of trained and armed natives from this and other districts, to be at the King's immediate command.
