A NOTED DOCUMENT.

The original copy of the declaration of American independence is no more. The stirring text and signatures of the members ot the Continental Congress (says the Washington correspondent of the New York Sun) have faded away. The piecious document preserved in the cabinet in the State departmental library is now practically nothing more than a large sheet of parchment. Part of the words " Declaration of Independence," which were written in large letters, are decipherable, but not a signature is visible to the naked eye. Ono hardly discernible stroke of John Hancock's pen is all that remains of the bold and vigorous autograph, whioh he purposely made large so- as to show the British Government that he had no fear of being known. The declaration is preserved in a narrow drawer, glass , covered, which slides in a steel safe with heavy double doors, locked by a combination. After its removal to the State department from Independence Hall in Philadelphia, where the National Congress held its session on 4th July, 1776, the declaration was placed in a glass case and exposed to the view of visitors. Owing to the strong light to which it was subjected it began to fade, and it was removed to the case in which it is / now preserved. This was several years ago. The fading continued, however, until riow the noted document is nothing more apparently than a mere blank sheet of paper.

For the month of December Hokilika heads the list with the highest total rainfall of 16.59 inches. The Hermitage (1G.34), and Ihglewood (14.48) come next. Kaikoura's total fall, however, was only 7.67 inchea, spread over 7 days.

CAUGIIT A DREADFUL COLD.

Marion Kooke, manager for T. M. Thomp pon, a large importer of fine millinery at 1658 Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago, says : During tbe late severe weather I caught a dreadful cold, which kept me awake at night, and made me unfit to attend my work during the day. One of my milliners was taking Chamberlain's Cough Remedy for a severe cold at that time, which seemed to relieve her so quickly that I bought some for myself. It acted like magic, and I began to improve at once I am now entirely well, and feel very pleased to acknowledge its merits." For sale at Hawera General Store. — Advt.
