LOAN FOR SURFACE DRAINAGE.

A ratepayers' meeting, convened to coneider the matter of a loan for 3uvface drainage,, was held on Wednesday evening. Tbe attendance was meagre. In the absence of the Mayor, who was out of town on business, Cr Bobbins was voted to the chair.

Tho Chairman said the meeting was a formal one only. It was proposed to abandon the scheme for drainage of High street, sanctioned by a poll of ratepayers, and to carry out iv lieu thereof the scheme formulated by Mensrs Climie and Fairhall. For £817 the work of draining several Bide streets, as well as High street, could be carried out. The Council, whioh had thoroughly threshed out the matter iv committee, had come to the conclusion that the proposed works were practical, and now desired the sanction of the ratepayers. The Chairman of the Works Committee and the Foreman had gone into the estimates with Mr Fairhall, and were thoroughly satisfied. Aoting on the advice of their solicitor, it had been thought better to take a poll on the subject.

As there were no questions, The Chairman gave notice that a poll would be taken on Wednesday, the sth February. The meeting adjourned.
