THE BOSTON CONCERT COMPANY.

This evening, in the Opera House, the Boston Concert Company will give their first concert, and we feel assured that lovers of music who attend will thoroughly enjoy themselves. All the members of the company come here with good reputations — Bernhard Walther, as a violinist of great skill; Miss Lilian Walther, as a mezzo-soprano of fine voice and excellent stage, presence ; Mr Cyrus Brownlee Newton, as a monologue entertainer of much versatility; and Misß Beatrice Vartha, as a capable pianiste.

A case of a teohnioal character was heard at Napier against a farmer for allowing 60 calves to be without food or water. The calves came from Pahiatua, but as it waa dark, and the station yards were full; of rolling stock, it was considered inadvisable to unload the calves, and they were left in the trucks until 7.30 next morning. The Magistrate held that there had been technical but involuntary cruelty on defendant's part, and he dismissed the case.

At a meeting of battalion officers at the camp at New Plymouth, a discussion took place as-to what uniform should be adopted by the battalion. There were two proposals, viz., that the uniform should consist of red tunic with blue facings and blue trousers with red stripes, and that the uniform Bhould be dark blue cloth with white facings. The Taranaki Rifles and Guards, and Hawera and Eltham representatives voted for the red, and Inglewood, Stratford, and Waitara for the blue. Officers present were instructed to ascertain which of the two uniforms their companies were in favour of, and to send in a report not later than March Ist.

A Christchurch wire states that the case of the woman suffering from lupuß has come up again. Some time ago tbe Hospital Board placed her in a separate ward, and now the house surgeon says she is a dangerous lunatic. The superintendent at Sunnyeide Asylum says there is no accommodation for such cases there. It has been decided she shall remain at the hospital for the present, and a night nurse has been secured for her, bat the difficulty is in getting a day nurse, as the woman is said to be dreadfully disfigured and has the use of only one arm.

Proposals for a loan for a water and drainage scheme at Gisborne, as devised by Mr Meatayer, C.E., were carried yesterday by a majority of two to one. There was heavy polling, and the result was received with great jubilation.

| The Patea Press says :— We understand that the Patea Shipping Company has entered into a five years' agreement with the West Coast Refrigerating Company for the carriage of all the Company's butter from Patea to Wellington. In order to cope with the trade, the Shipping Company have decided to put on a new boat specially built for the trnde, and Mr Bennett, the engineer of the Mana, leaves on Friday week by 'Frisco mail steamer to bring her out. The boat is to be insulated throughout and fitted up with a Linde refrigerator of 1* ton ice making capacity. She will be 100 feet long, 20ft beam, Bft depth of hold, and will carry 120 tons dead weight, on a maximum draught of Bft. Her speed will be 10 knots an hour, and she is to be fitted up with all tho latest appliances in the way of electric light, search lights for working the harbour at night, steam steering gear, etc. The vessel will be built at Paisley, Scotland, and will be here ready to take up the running on November Ist. It is only due to the Company to say that the successful inauguration of the Patea butter trade has been largely helped by the manner in which the little steamer Mana has bandied the produce, and wo can hope with confidence that the same satisfactory state of things will long continue.

"Cruel only to be kind."— Muoh unnecessary suffering is inflicted under the above excuse.
