Wellington, January 21.

Tom Mann, the English labour leader, arrived to-day from London. He intends to settle in Wellington. Asked whether he would enter politics, he said he would probably do so, but it was not certain.

Mr Courtney, of Taraoaki, arrived with another batch of emigrants by the Euapehu to day.

The success which has attended the trte planting operations carried out by prisoners at Waiotapu is looked upon by the Minister for Justice as a strong ren?on in favour of the setting up in the country of a large penal establishment, the inmates of which would be engaged in gardening and farming. The inquiry into the complaints recently made regarding the Terrace Gaol, Wellington, will be made by Messrs Haselden, S.M., and Poynton, Publio Trustee.

Christchurch, January 21. A conference of delegates of local bodies outside the city, interested in taking over the tramways, decided in favor of a paid Tramways Board, to be elected on the municipal franchise. The City Council has not fallen in with the views of the other local bodies, as it wants to mn the whole tramway system itself, but an attempt will be made to induce it to fall in with the general idea.

Wanganoi, January 22.

The Hospital Board to-day accepted plans for the Queen Victoria ward at the Hospital. The new wing will accommodate 22 beds, and will be 100 by 25 feet, and contain several other rooms, lavatories, etc. The building will cost about £2500, nearly half of which has been raised by local subscription.

Wanganui, January 22. Cape. Charlie Soramerville, son of Col. Sommerville, who was lieutenant in the Second Contingent, and was wounded in the arm, has received a commission as captain in the Eighth, probably in the South Island division.
