TEACHERS' SUMMER SCHOOL.

The Teachers' Summer School was opened this morning oy the Chairman Of tbe Education Board, who, with fche Mayor, Mr Hatrick, extended a cordial welcome to the visitors. Nearly 300 teachers are present, and the school laßta ten days. The instruction includes science, kindergarten, brush work, modelling, arid botany: and the drill instructors include Messrs W. Gray (Vice-Principal of the Normal Training College. Dunedin), J. S. Tennant (rector of Ashburton High School), Miss Avison (mistress of Timaru Main School), and Miss Landels (Dunedin, and late South Kensington, London). Dr. Smyth, Chief Inspector, Wanganui, who originated the idea, explained* that similar schools had been started in the Old Land, and the object was that teachers might have an opportunity cf seeing the latest Bnd most up-to-date methods of teaching, particularly in manual and technical instruction.
