I A recent cablegram intimated that the Bey. Mr Askew, a popular preacher in Liverpool, had every window in his house smashed for preaching a pro-Boer sermon. The name evidently should have been the Rev. C. P. Aked. His views on the war were recently given in the following form:— '• It was wrong to begin the war; it is wrong to go on with it; it ought to be stopped. The terms of settlement should be the recognition of the complete independence of the South African Republic, with a confession of sin, and a money compensation paid by us. We are engaged in a criminal and cowardly war, waged on hypocritical and lying pretences. Our path has led through perjury to massacre. And as a guarantee of good faith, I suggest, also, that we arrange for ten editors to shoot ten financiors, and then hang the editors for doing it. That would make for the peace of the world." In another column Mr Geo. H. Scales announces that the barque Weathersfield is now receiving enrgo for London. This vessel (chartered by Mr Scales) is the only locally owned ship trading between Wellington and London, and has for many years been sailing under the flag of the New Zealand Shipping Company. On her laat visit to London, this barque underwent special survey for classification, and was awarded the highest class in Voritaa.
