AUSTRALIAN NEWS.

Received January 20, 9.40 a.m.

Sydney, January 204' The correspondent of the Daily Telegraph suggests naming the federal capital Chamberlain, in recognition of Mr Chamberlain's services to Australia, and inducing England to side with America during the Spanish-American war, thus preventing Germans getting possession of the Philippines. Mr See, like some other of the State Premiers, is sore over the "distinguished person " in contradistinction to Messrs Barcon and Seddon's "royal guest " treatment.

At the Coronation, Mr See says unless the New South Wales representative can attend on equal conditions to New Zealand he is not disposed to go. The Herald, commenting on the subject, says : If New South Wales is to be regarded as a province not worthy of the consideration extended to New Zealand, with half the population of our State, it is noc unlikely that State politics here will be looked upon as of small account. Possibly, when invitations arrive, they will be so worded as to remove the least cause of offence."
