The references to the soldiers contained in the King's Speech at the opening of Parliament are favourably com* mented upon on the Continent.

Many newspapers express delight at Mr Seddon's speech at the Wellington patriotic demonstration. In the House of Commons the Eight Hon. A. J. Balfour, Leader of the House, stated that no official assurances had been asked for by Germany in reference to Mr Chamberlain's speech which led to the outburst of Anglophobia.

Lord Lansdowne, Secretary of State for War, said he had, in an unofficial conversation, pointed out to the German Ambassador that Mr Chamberlain made no charges of barbarity against German or other armies. The Government considered that nothing in the speech required qualification or withdrawal.

London, January 19. In the House of Commons Mr McNamara, member for Caruberwell, moved an amendment to the Addrees-in-Eeply, urging that provision be made for the better housing of the poor. It was negatived by 153 to 123, though it met with much sympathy from Mr Long, President of the Local Government! Board, who promised the appointment of a Committee to consider the extension of the periods of local loans.
