RETURNING NEW ZEALANDERS.

Auckland, January 17. A number of troopers returning from South Africa arrived by the Aotea x from Cape Town via Hobart. They are' 4 under the command of SergeantMajor Lockett (Seventh Contingent), who was wounded in an engagement at Colesburg, where he had his right arm shot off, the gun being only about seven yards distant. The Mayor and Town Clerk welcomed the troopers. SergeantMajor Lookett mentioned that Beveral of the men wished to return to South Africa with the Eighth Contingent, tad as some had reached the rank of sergeant and sergeant-major in the Seventh and other Contingents, they thought it would only be fair for the Government to give these men some consideration, if possible, in the shape of commissions in the Eighth Contingent.
