CRICKET.

THIBD TEST MATCH,

ENGLAND v. AUSTRALIA.

Beceived January 17, 8.6 p.m.

Adelaide, January 17. Nine thousand people were present. England won the toss, and Maclaren and Hayward opened to Trumble and McLeod. Both played cautiously, and the first ten runs took twenty minutes. The scoring gradually became faster, chiefly at the expense of Trumble, who was trying to tempt Hayward. Noble and Howell were then tried. Off the former Maclaren made a bad stroke, which dropped safely behind square leg. The wicket was slower than usual, and consequently easy, the bowling lacking in " devil." Howell's off-breaks gave the batsmen some trouble, two or three times beating them and the stumps too. Armstrong and Trumper were tried ineffectually before luncheon, when the total stood at 88, each batsman having made 43.

Armstrong and Howell resumed the bowling, and off the former's third over Hayward got ten in three hits, making the total 100 in that number of minutes. At 110 Trumble relieved Howell. Three runs later Maclaren, when his score was 51, was bowled by Armstrong with a noball, but the batsmen did not know it, for he was walking away when called back. Hayward forged ahead, the captain and the Surrey man making fine strokes all round, though some of Maclaren's were not quite so certain. At 126, McLeod .relieved Armstrong, but runs now came rapidly, although the fielding was smart. At 149 Maclaren hesitated about running for his own stroke to the third man, and his hesitation cost him his wicket. His innings lasted two hours and a quarter, and he gave no chances. His score included seven 4's.

Tyldesley pottered about for a quarter of an hour, and then tried a big hit, and skied the ball back to Trumble. Two wickets for 160.

Four runs later, Hay ward rather in gloriously ended a fine innings by slogging at a ball from Noble, which he just touched. It rebounded from the wicket-keeper's hands, and as the batsman was out of his ground he was run out. He played a perfect innings, lasting t*o hours and fifty minutes, and he hie eleven 4's.

At 171 Jessop ballooned the ball to Trumper at long- off. He judged the catch perfectly.

Quaife was twenty minutes without scoring, but Lilley got to work steadily. When he had made ten the latter was missed by Trumble in the slips, off Noble. The field closed in when Quaife faced Noble, but he drove one ball over their heads to the boundary. At 186 Trumble got Lilley leg-before. Trumble's last twelve overs yielded seven runs for three wickets.

When Braund went in Armstrong replaced Noble. Braund got quickly to double figures, and the second century appeared in three hours and forty-five minutes. The score mounted steadily, chiefly due to Braund. At 220 Trumper replaced Armstrong. Shortly afterwards Howell gave Trumble a spell, and McLeod relieved Trumper. Quaife's play was slow but chanceless, and he batted for two hours. Braund's was a dashing game. The fielding was brilliant. The scores were : England. — First Innings.
