Seconded by Mr Hastie. The Chairman was of opinion that patching the lower portion would keep I it open, but thought that 500 yards was j rather a big order. j A general discussion followed, the j pros and cons of this road and its state j being threshed out, loans advocatd, and ' a general agreement that Messrs Old t and Wells' proposals re private sub- j sidies had fallen fiat, seeing that ' nothing had been heard of same for j nine weeks. I I The motion was eventually carried. | CORNER SECTIONS. ) In the past, it having been the rule for many years that the corner sections on main roads should " collar " the ' rates accruing to same, thereby robbing the bye -roads of its share, The Chairman moved, in accordance with notice given, That in future in the northern and central sub- division, rates from corner sections on main roads be allocated one half each to the main and bye roads on which they abut. — Seconded by Mr Powdrell, and carried. SUIHEBLAND ROAD. Resolved, That tenders be called for 9 chains gravel repairs on Sutherland road conditionally that the Town Board agrees to contribute £ for £. (Hastie —Powdrell). MAIN SODTH ROAD Mr Henson asked that the portion recently merged into the newly-formed Egmont County should receive its share of expenditure. Resolved, That £125 be expended between the Nopera road and Mr Lambie's gate. (Powdrell — Henson. ) foreman's report. Contracts completed during the past month.— 2B7, Skeet road, E. Good progress is being made, and the works are well advanced. 290, Auroa road, Allenby, formation and metalling. The work is near completion. 312, Glenn Road, D. Green : At , present, the contract (supply of gravel) is not being proceeded with. I cannot understand the reaeon why the contractor is delaying the work now ; both the weather and road are favourable to work being carried out. Contracts let last month : 315, Oeo Road, W, Humphries, and 318, Main South road, W. Sutton. These contraots have been commenced. 317, Eltham road, E. Blackhall: The contractor informs me that he will make a start this week. 294, Forming and kerbing footpath, Kaponga, D. H. Briggs : This work has been partly completed. On interviewing the contractor re delay in completion of work, be informed me that he intends putting the work in hand nest week. JSe Mr N. Innes' application to have the Upper Oeo Road line felled, I find that, with the exception of a few standing trees, the whole of the road has been felled. During the month the weather has not been altogether favorable for pushing on with road work, and the progress of all works has been somewhat retarded. The usual accounts were passed, and the Board rose. PISHING! ! FISHING !! F. J. I ( Continued from page 2. ) The Clerk was instructed to communicate with the Department as to the Board's present position as to grants passed on tbe estimates at the last session. (Wilkie — Bridge.) LOANS. A formal special order making a special rate re Glenn Road 10 per cent, additional advance of 10 per cent, on the £1200 loan was confirmed. (Wilkie — Henson.) Special orders making special rates as security for the Rama and Taikatu loans 10 per cent, additional advances were adopted. (Bridge — Wilkie.) It was resolved to raise an additional advance of 6 per cent, on the central sub-division £8300 loan, and a special order was adopted striking a special rate as seourity for the loan. (Bridge— Henson.) Resolved, That the Foreman confer with tbe Chairman and Mr Borne as to the portions of the road in the llama Road loan area that shall be left unmet ailed, the amount raised being insufficient to metal the length of the road contemplated. (Wilkie — Henson.) Resolved, That the next meeting of the Board be held on Thursday, 13th February, in order that special orders as adopted at to-day's meeting might be confirmed. LOWER NORMANBY ROAD. As W. Back, the successful tenderer for this road, is engaged with his horses at grader and scraping work, the Board was asked to permit J. J. Patterson to do the work, using machine-crushed metal in lieu of hand-broken stone. Resolved, That the Foreman be empowered to deal with Patterson re completion of the works, conditionally that cost of same be not more than tbe contract price, and that an additional 13 chains of metalling bo authorised in connection with tbe same road. (Wilkie — Henson .) DEPUTATION. Messrs A. McKeown, Collins, Fagan, Barlow, and Dickson waited on the Board as a deputation, asking that a portion of the Patiki road, southern subdivision, be formed, in order to give them an outlet. They pointed out that last' year the Board promised to form their road after the gravelled portion was repaired, but the latter works absorbed the whole of tbe available funds, and they bad a quagmire instead of a road. They wished the Board to consider tbe matter of not accepting any tender at to-day's meeting for metal repairs south of the Skeet road, but to devote sufficient funds to the credit of the Patiki road to formation on the northern portion. After the matter had been thoroughly threshed out, it was resolved to deal with the matter when tenders were opened. Later on, when in committee dealing with tenders, tbe Board resolved, That, in the opinion of this meeting, formation is inadvisable, acd the deputation be informed that the Board's idea is that roads in such a state as tbe Patiki north should be metalled when funds permit, and that tbe Board proposes to clear away logs on the road, in order to give more road room to the portion complained of. (Wilkie— Henson) KAPONGA. A letter was received from the Kaponga Settlers' Association, asking when the Board intended to move in tbe matter of metalling the streets in the township to their full width, pointing out that tho Board had deferred consideration of the matter until after the rate was struck. Mr Wilkie said the sides of the streets were nothing but quagmires in wftt weather. j£2so worth of broken stone would be required to do about 20 chains of streets, and the work would sooner or later require to be done. He moved v That the Foreman call for tenders for" expenditure of £250 in this connection. Seconded by Mr Hastic. In answer to a question, it was stated that rates accruing in Eaponga are allocated to the Manaia and Eltham roads. Mr Henson remarked that a portion of the work would be debited to tho Eltham road, and the whole length of this road being treated as one road account, the western end would contribute to Kaponga street works. He did not favor the motion. Mr Powdrell thought it was a matter of spending the road's rates on streets in the township versus on the road in the country. He asked is the Association composed of farmers or townspeople, and would there be an outcry by the country people against spending road rates in town ? Mr Wilkie said the settlers favored the metalling of the streets. Mr Borrie : Go in for a town board of your own. Mr Wilkie : If the Road Board blocked this matter, settlers would merge into a riding of the Council. After considerable discussion, Mr "Wilkie agreed to amend his motion in favor of a reduction in the vote to £150, the seconder (Mr Hastie) acquiescing. Upon a division being taken, the motion was carried. Division — Ayes, Messrs Wilkie, Haßtie, Borrie, and Da vies. Noes, Messrs Henson, Powdrell, and Chairman. BIiTHAM ROAD. J. T. Kidd wrote re repairs needed at Awatuna, near Townsend's shop. Eesolved, That Mr Kidd be informed that the' Foreman is attending to the necessary works. (Wilkie— Borrie.) AUROA ROAD. M. O'Sullivan wrote at length on the requirements of the Auroa Ro,ad on his frontage near the Mountain Reserve. Resolved, That a reply be forwarded to the effect that the lower portion requires the expenditure of all moneys due to the road, and that if this portion is permitted to get hopelessly into a state of disrepair, access to tbe northern portion will be impossible. (Wilkie— Bridge.) J. P. Baker, Geo. Smith, Isabella Innes, T. Waite, and J. Allman wrote, asking that a cutting on this road, near the Bawmill, be attended to. Resolved, That the Foreman be empowered to send a road man to do necessary works. (Wilkie— Powdrell.) Mr J. P. Baker added a postscript to the letter, reminding the Board that there are four cuttings on this road, of which he keeps two in order with his own labor, and undertaking to look after the other two if the Board will do something to them in the way of improvement. He wound up by trusting the shadows of the members had not grown less since his last communication. MOTION OF CONDOLENCE. Resolved, That this Beard desires to express its sympathy with the Chairman in his late sad bereavement consequent on the death of his lace wife. (Wilkie— Henson.) HIRE OF CRUSHBR. T. Brough attended, and asked whether the Board would hire the crusher to him for a month. As the orusber will be required on tbe Board's works for the next few weeks, at f the very least, Mr Brough was informed to that effect. CONTRACT. Resolved, That Green receives notice to at once proceed with his contract in terms of specifications and conditions of contract, and that progress payment passed at to-day's meeting be withheld until he recommences operations. (Wilkie— Bridge.) MANAIA ROAD — SOUTHERN. Mr Wilkie brought up the vexed question of this road, stating that he thought a portion of it was worth patching. He moved, That the Foreman be empowered to call for tenders for 500 yards shingle for jrepairs between the town boundary and Mr W. T. Wells' gate.

We have received a copy of the Hawkba Stab Almanac and West Coast Direotory for 1902, whioh is a most serviceable compilation of useful information. The direotory of tbe northern towns ia very oomplete, and appears to be accurate in detail. There are valuable hints on gardening and farming, while such legislation as is likely to affect the general publio in any speoial way is given in an I intelligible form, and includes fishing and shooting regulations, registering births and deaths, etc., etc. Altogether, the volume is a most complete vade mecum for the country settlers, and is a credit to its compilers and publishers.
