Christmas is with us once again, and with it that ever welcome and indispensable publication, the Star Almanac. This book, which is in i:s nineteenth year of publication, continues to increase in usefulness. Each year the painstaking compiler adds some new feature, increasing its value to the farmer, the merchant, the shopkeeper, and tho professional man. It contains a complete* list of all centres of population on the west coast of the North Island, and, considering the shifting naturo of nil co.'onial populations, a wonderfu'ly correct directory. It also contains a mass of statistical information, a very useful garden calendar, tables of great value to farmers, information regarding stamp duties, and a brief synopsis of a number of statutes bearing ; on everyday life. In bulk it has increased from 308 to 448 pages since last year ; but owing to careful editing and compilation, and the admirable arrangement of the matter it contains, its usefulness is doubled. It is published from the Hawera Star Office, and sold at. the low price of is ■ 3d, but can be obtained from all bookBellers. It should find a place in every home and business place in Taranaki. One of the most useful publications J issued in the colony is undoubtedly the Stab Almanao and West Coast Directory, i A copy for 1902 has just oome to hand from the enterprising publisher, Mr W. A. Parkinson, of Hawera, and it is quite equal in point of completeness to any of its predecessors. The work is neatly printed, admirably compiled, and altogether reflects the greatest credit on the office from which t it emanated. * Wanganui Chronicle. I Parkinson's Stab Almanac and West Coast Directory for 1902. As usual, the publication is decidedly creditable to the publisher, Mr W. A. Parkinson, of the Hawera Star. In addition to the directory i which embraces a full list of the inhabitants of Wanganui, Palmetston, and v New Plymouth, and all the intervening settlements, tbe Almanac contains a large I quantity of very interesting and instructive matter. There are, for instance, agricultural and other statistics, a carefully compiled summary of the statutes affecting tho farming commnnily, a table of Customs duties, mail intelligence, farm and garden " calendars, and, in short, information of use and value to every section of the community. The Stab Directory is well gut up and cleanly printed, and, published as it is at a price whioh brings it within the roach i of all, it should find a large circulation.
