HAWERA.

Locally, yesterday was observed as a day of mourning, all business places closing at noon.

-A memorial service will be held in the Wesleyan Church, Hawera, on Sunday evening.

In High street last evening, the Borough Band, under Bandmaster Hughes, played the " Dead March." The omission of a couple of words in a paragraph yesterday was calculated to mislead. It said the Queen was crowned eight days after the death of William IV. ; it should have read " a year and eight days."

A solemn service in commemoration of Her Majesty will be held in St. Mary's Church on Sunday next, immediately after morning prayer. The preacher at this service and also at the evening service will be the Rev. H, Anson.

In the Anglican Churches, after the prayer for the King, next Sunday, the prayer for the Royal Family will probably read : " Our Gracious Queen Alexandra, the Duke and Duchess of York, and all the Royal Family."

In a prayer book of 1638, after the suffrage for King Charles, appears the following : " That it may please Thee to bless and preserve our Gracious Queen Mary, our noble Prince Charles, the Lady Mary, the Princess Elizabeth, with her royal issue." In a prayer book dated 1770, after the prayer for King George follows a prayer for "Their Royal Highnesses George, Prince of Wales, the Princess Dowager of Wales, the Duke, the Princesses, and all the Royal Family."

Among the celebrities who died on the 22nd January in the past century may be noted William West all, painter, 1850 ; Sir Isaac Pitman, phonographer and refoxmer, 1897 ; and R. D. Blaokmore, novelist, 1900.
