DAY OF MOURNING.

Yesterday the Town Clerk (Mr A. G. Brett) wired to the Hon. J. G. Ward :— ■" Kindly inform me if it is the intention of '-Government to proclaim a national day of mourning in coDse'quence of the Queen's death." At 2.80 this afternoon Mr Brett received the following reply:— "The arrangements at present are as follows : All publio offices are to be olosed Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. I will wire you later what ia suggested in <jonneotion with mourning, in order to Jaave it general throughout the colony, lam in communication with His Excellency the Governor and Ministers upon the matter."

The following was issued by the Borough Council to-day :— " Death of tbe Queen.— The Government having requested the people to observe today aa a day of mourning, tbe Borough Council met and decided to desire citizens to close their premises as from 12 noon.— A. G. Brbtt, Town Clerk, Hawera, 24th January, 1901." In ;aecordance with request, the shops were closed. '
