It is a common enough occurrence to meet people who are contented with such simple forms of speech as, " Now this must be either right or wrong. If it is right," eto. The axiomatic truth of the world that may be dealt with as we deal with numbers, angles, straight* lines, circles, and other certainties, are very few in number. In almost all matters of opinion wo can reach only approximations to truth) not exact truth. But that is what simple minds dislike. They prefer to see every difference sharply marked as right or wrong, black or white, this side or that side. Anything more complex confuses them. They would be preplexed in the extreme if they were to try to trace truth &t all exactly as it winds its way tbruugh the maze of error. They regard it as a precious thing laid down plainly in well-defined strata, so to speak, like coal, and hot needing careful following like a lead-lode. Yet their experience of mankind alone might very well suggest to them that wholesale deductions respecting goodness and badness, right and wronp, are often untrustworthy.
