(from our own cobbbbpondbnt.) The Sohool Committee met in Mr Stewart's office on Friday evening last. Present: Messrs Williams (chair), Hunt, Miller, and Godfrey (secretary). As per notice given, Mr Bunt moved, That the resolution as passed at the initial meeting of the new committee, forming a visiting committee, be rescinded, and that the board as a whole be set up aa a committee to visit the school periodioa l)y._The obairman seconded, and said it gave him pleasure to see the interest the committee took in school matters. He thought it preferable for the whole of the committee to be empowered to vißit the school.- Carried. . Mrs Baine wrote, regretting that she is unable to take the school concert in hand. — It was resolved that Meadamea King and Patterson be asked to promote the conoert. The inspector wrote advising that he would inspect the sohool on the 15th and 16th inst.

The Rev. J. de B. Galwoy, B.A;, gives a magic-lantern lecture in the Oddfellows' Hall on Thursday night, the subject being " Scenes in South India." Admission will be free, and a collection will be taken up at the close of the lecture, in aid of the New Zealand Church Mission Association. I hear that the Opunake Brass Band has been engaged to play at the forthcoming Bports on 9th November. Why is it the " city of the Plains " cannot run a band? Is it want of musical talent, or indifference on the part of townspeople in subscribing to so worthy an objeot ? Echo answers " both." Tho funeral of the late Wm. Barclay on Sunday afternoon last wsb a largely attended one. The Rev. W. H. Phillip conducted the service at the grave, whilst Messrs J. D. Mitohell, A. Hastie, A. Gattanaoh, and D. Clark were the pallbearers. •
