In Banco to-day, before the Chief Justice, Messrs Bannatyne and Co., representing the Tyser Co., sought a ruling as'to their right to recover £800 paid by them as poll tax on three Chinese, belonging to the crew of the steamer Indralema, who ran away from that vessel while berthed at Queen's wharf, Wellington. Auckland, Octobers. At the Police Court to-day, Margaret Boyd was charged with causing Eileen Boyd, a song and dance artiste, aged nine years and two months, to perform in a place of public amusement. The case was adjourned to allow of enquiries being made in Wellington. Christohubch, Octobers. At the Magistrate's Court to-day, Thos. Estill, in charge of the local corps of the Salvation Army, was charged with allowing the Army barracks, which is not licensed, to be used for a publio performance, to wit, the Maori Festival. The defendant was fined Is without COStSi > The Mayor has received a letter from Mr G. G. Stead, offering to give a prize of J650 for the best rifle shot in Canterbury in 1901. He suggests that the prize be a silver challenge cup of the value of JE2S, with a purse of 25 soys; the cup to be competed for every year, but the purse to be handed to the ■winner in 1901, and he trusts that J625 will be added each year by other donors.
