A GRAVE CHARGE. William Graham, a youth, was indicted on two counts — (i) with assaulting, on 29th May, near Awatuna, Caroline Hills with intent to commit a rape ; and (2) with indecently assaulting Caroline Hills. The jury found the prisoner guilty, and recommended him to mercy on account of his youth. His Honor said had it not been for the jury's recommendation he would have passed a sentence of* seven years' imprisonment. Accused would have to go to gaol for four years. Prisoner was removed, crying bitterly.
