Marchant. In the front was the Eltham Town Band (Bandmaster McKay), followed by a conveyance occupied by a handsome representation of Britannia holding a sceptre, then Brunette's Band, and next a large Union Jack carried by the school boys, and followed by a large canvass frame mounted on wheels and illuminated from within. On one side was painted by Mr Connell a fierce-looking lion with Kruger twisting his tail, on the other side { was a hat and a boot, presumably Kruger's, and the lion reposing with a happy smile on his face, on the end was a fine painting of General Roberts, and in front the hero of Mafeking. Bringing up the rear was the Darktown Brigade, with musical and unmusical instruments. A large crowd followed the procession, singing patriotio songs. The effect of the many torches and colored lights was really striking, the perfect calmness of the night adding to the effeot. Along the route many business placeß and private residences were festooned with Chinese lanterns and other colored lights. After traversing the principal streets, the procession returned to the , railway station, where a large pile was erected on the reserve, surmounted by an effigy of Kruger. This was b'ghted and biased merrily for hours. A fine display of fireworks was made by Mr Calgher while ' the bonfire blazed. The hat was passed round for contributions for the Indian > Famine Fund, with very satisfactory 1 results. A noticeable feature in the crowd . was the intense enthusiasm and good humor displayed. To wind up a very successful demonstration, a large number > adjourned to the Town Hall, where dancing , was indulged in, the musio being supplied , by Miss Martin, Messrs Martin, McKay, Campbell, and Keen. Mr Alf. Hansen acted as M.C. ; May 18th. 1 To-day 1 had the pleasure of inspecting some very fine work in the shape of dog- : carts and gigs turned out by Mr Briant's Coach Factory. For workmanship and finish, combined with lightness and strength, they are not to be surpassed — ! and reflect great credit on Mr Briant's workmen. Any one wanting this line of goods need not go out of Eltham to bo suited. The Eltham gig is a new design of 1 of Mr Briant's own invention, the main 1 points of which are lightness and strength 1 and an arrangement of springs by whioh very easy riding is secured, and the easy method of shifting the seat is very simple 1 and effective. I noticed four building in , the workshop— two ready to go out, one finished in the natural wood with red , wheels and trimmings and fine lines traced in yellow, built to the order of Mr G. W. Taylor. The other is painted dark green and black, the fine lines and scrolls traced in white, and a handsome four-wheeled dog cart painted dark green and black, the fine lines being in straw oolor, with dark green leather trimmings — a really comfortable turn-out. This is built to the order of an Opunake customer. Also a very smart gig built to the order of Mr J. Bourke, of Mangatoki, with carved back and hung on three springs. I understand the idea of three springs on this class of gig is quite a new departure, and adds considerably to the comfort of riding. ; Besides these, the factory has under way several other vehicles of a heavier class. • On the 24th a working bee will be held on the Becreation Ground to level off the ploughed part and get it ready for grass seed. This is a matter that wants to be i done at once, so that the ground may be [ in order for use early next year, so roll up boys and get a move on— 9 o'clock to 12. In the afternoon the Junior and Senior . Cup matches will be played on the football 1 ground between Hawera and Eltham teams. The Juniors kick oil at 1 o'clock and the Seniors at 3 o'clock sharp.
