LIGHTING.

The committee reported that the Gas Co. were contemplating extending mains to some of the back streets, and if this was done it was suggested that gas lamps should be erected. Failing that, it was 'recommended that the kerosene lamps be put in order and arrangements made with the lamplighter- to light them.

The Mayor moved the adoption of tbe report.

Cr Bartlett pointed out that no time should' be lost in lighting the spots in qaestion, as bye-roads even with lights were tbe worst. He also understood that tbe lamplighter had agreed to light all lamps in borough, and now the committee were proposing another arrangement. It was stated by the Mayor and clerk that the lamplighter had refused to sign the agreement to attend to the kerosene, and before he would do so he would resign his position altogether. The report was adopted. FIRE BRIGADE.

The committee recommended : — That council contribute half cost of telephonic connection with the residences of the captain and lieutenant of the brigade ; the department had agreed to connect the Fire Brigade station free of charge. Cr Bobbins, in moving adoption of report, said the captain and lieutenant, were themselves willing to pay half cost. Application had also been made to allow several outlying subscribers to the exchange to be connected all nights with the station, so that an alarm of fire on the outskirts could be given without delay, and it would have the effect of making their alarm system a good one.

Cr Pacey seconded the adoption, which was carried.

The Recreation Ground Committee sent in tho minutes of meetings they had held. ' They recommended that the public be invited to celebrate Arbor Day for any other day appointed by the Mayor) by gifts of trees, the same to be brought and planted under supervision of the Domain Board. That Mr Goodwin receive notice to remove cowshed from under trees and put ditch and bank and fence in proper order. That a lodge be immediately erected and a custodian be appointed, as tbe work about to be done required the urgent attention and care of someone living on the ground ; cost of lodge was estimated at £200.

Cr Fake reported that he had employed men as directed at last meeting, and that tbe work was progressing in a satisfactory manner.

Objection was taken to the minutes, it being contended that the usual report should have been submitted instead of minutes.

The Mayor proposed that the suggestion re Arbor Day be adopted, but that other matters- contained in the report be dealt with at next meeting. In reply to Cr. Bobbins, The Mayor said tbe cost of labor would be about £18. Proposal agreed to. FINANCE.

The surfaceman bad had in some cases to repair the damages, and he had obtained from him an estimate of cost. He would move, "That the Council be instructed to put the roads in the same condition as they found them, and that the cost of repair (£5 ss) with 10 per cent. - added, be "charged to the Council."
