This afternoon, Mr Trimble, Clerk of the District Court in Bankruptcy, when the petition of Wong, Hong Kew and Co., of Wellington, applying for the adjudication of Tai- Shing, of this place, storekeeper, as a bankrupt was heard. After taking evidence, from which it appeared that Tai Shing has been away for four weeks (where is not known) without having authorised anyone to oarry on his business. An order was made adjudging the debtor a bankrupt. Mr Weston (instructed by Mr Welsh) appeared for thecpetitioning creditors. The late Rev. W. Oolenso, who died at Napier on Friday was an illustrious man in many ways. He was the first .person to set up a printing press in the colony, having as far back as 1835 issued— after personally doing all the preliminary mechanical work— a Maori translation of St. Paul's Epistle to tbe Ephesians. From thence onward his time for almost 50 years was devoted to missionary work, in the course of whioh he traversed nearly the whole of the North Island on foot a tremendous undertaking fraught with innumerable dangers and difficulties. During these travels he gained an almost unparalleled acquaintance with the native language and customs, and there was no greater authority on the art, mythology and legendary law of the native people. With Mr Colenso's death the laet of the band of Englishmen present at the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, on February 6th, 1840, passed away. As a man of science he had a wide reputation being a Fellow of the Linnsan Society, and also a Fellow of the Royal Sooiety. The latter honour was conferred upon him in recognition of his distinguished contributions to the botanical knowledge of ,the age. Among other scientific achievements he claimed tbe distinction of being the first to identify the fossil remains of the moa.
