«4 The soiree in connection with the anniversary of the Hawera Wesleyan Church> at the Opera House on Wednesday evening was in every way a success. Dixon, assisted by Miss Daisy Barnard and Dolly Dixon ; Mrs Barraolough and Mrs Hutohens, assisted by Misses Patten and Clark. In addition to these many ladies provided refreshments of different kinds. ' Tea< over, a good programme was submitted, and was highly appreciated, viz. : Overture, the Flynn family ; song, " Queen of the earth," Mr Keen ; song, Ml Twas but a dream," Mrs Wrigley; song, "For the children's sake," Miss McAlpine; duet, "Army and Navy," Messrs Keen and Fraser; violin solo, Mr McClurg. The choir under the oonductorship of Mr MoAlpine gave four anthems in capital style. The Revs. F. T. Read (Stratford) and P. J. Cossum (Eltham) were present and addressed the meeting. During the course of the programme, Mr Beokingsale, the church steward, read the annual report, which stated the services in connection with the church had been well sustained during the year. The membership roll was practically the same as last year notwithstanding the departure from the district of a large number of members. The Sunday School had made gratifying progress during the year and there were now 147 scholars on tbe roll with an average attendance of 119 and 19 teachers and officers with an average of 16, being an increase of 80 and 8 respectively. The oboir has rendered valuable service, and special thanks were due to Mr MoAlpine (conductor) and Miss A. Foy (organist). The Rev C. H. Laws, who will have been four years in the circuit at next conference, has accepted an invitation to Lyttelton, and will leave in April next. The Rev Dukes, of Waimate, Canterbury, has agreed to accept an invitation as Mr Laws' successor. In regard to finance last year's overdraft (£2l) had been increased by about £40, but against this some £73 worth of special work in the shape of fencing, painting, etc., had been paid for. The net receipts therefore were considerably in excess of last year. At the conclusion of the programme the meeting expressed by loud acclamation a hearty vote of thanks to the ladies who had provided the tea and to all those who had otherwise assisted to make the meeting a success.
