RAINFALL. j ■♦ .* i The rainfall for July at various places in this province was, according to the Gazette, as follows :—: — j

Farm and. X>airy. ♦ Conducted by " Winnower.") A NEW METHOD OP BUTTER TRANSIT. On May 80 last a small shipment of butter, packed in boxes coated with a composition in order to be sent home by the s.s. Nineveh. By this process the butter intended for export is packed in a box in the ordinary way, but the outside of the latter is coated with a composition of asbestos and gypsum. It is claimed that this preparation, which excludes the air, has the effect of . preserving the butter for several months, and allows of it being shipped as ordinary cargo in the hold of a vessel, instead of being sent to England in the refrigerating chamber. The boxes coated with the composition are enclosed in others, to prevent the coating being rubbed off or damaged in the handling. The great advantage of the process (supposing it to be proved to be quite safe) is that the freight on butter will be about 40s to 50s per ton,, instead of £7 a ton, the charge for conveyance in the refrigerating chambers. Our London correspondent, writing on July 22, states that the experiment appears to have turned out a success. Mr J. Sinclair, the representative in England of the Victorian Agricultural Department, opened several oases, and found the butter in good condition and the taste normal. Our correspondent adds that the experiment was made under disadvantages which nead not be repeated. — Melbourne Argus. LEATHER GOODS NOW IN STOCK.
