THE TARIFF FIGHTS.

Mr Beiti, speaking to the financial resolutions said an opportunity would be given to members to propose amendment! to tariffi but tbe Government wonld not bind themselves toaooept them: They were averse to applying olosure, but if necessary woa'ddoßu. Tbe Government were moderate Protectionists and tbe recommendations adopted, therefore, were not likely to interfere with established industries. The importation of prison-made goods would be prohibited. The duty on tobacco manufactured in tbe oolony would be raised from sixpence to ninepence, cigarettes from eixpenoe to 2a. Doty on sugar looally refined wonld be raised from 5s to 5a 63. The import duties on spirits would be reduced from 15s to 18s per gallon, and the excise duties on grape brandy and malt whiskey from 18a to 9s ; other sorts to 11s per gallon ; oandleß would be reduced from 2d to lid ; imported woollens to 15 per cent; tbe duties on machinery would also be reduced ; the primage duties wonld be i abolished on January Ist.
