FARM AND DAIRY. DAIRY NOTES.

The folloxoing appeared in portion of last issue

FEOM OUR CARDIFF CORRESPONDENT, Our dairy direotore bave set up a committee to report npon tbe question of putting in a separator for spring batter making. Oar faotory closed on Thursday. Towards the close it took only B!ba of milk to make a pound of obeese. There is trouble with the National Dairy Atiooiation again. You will remember tbat when the compromise was arrived at last year between tbe North Island factories and tbe Association it was agreed that tbe annual meetings should be held in Wellington, as being tbe most central plaoe for the whole oolony. Tbe South Island executive bas apparently baoked oat of this agreement, for it bas notified tbe North Island executive tbat on acoountof tbe depressed state of tbe indastry tbe southern members are unable to get to Wellington, and tbe annual meeting will therefore be held in Dunedin in the first week of Jane. Plain people call this sort of thing by an ugly name.

The dairymen who have been supply* iog Honnor and Orookett's factories and creameries in tho Mountain road distriot have taken them over art a co-operative concern, tbe price being £2600. This is, however, exclusive of tbe Pembroke road ereamory, the suppliers of which were disinclined to take a hand in tbe whole concern, and who take over tbeir oreamery and run it bb a faotory for themselves. I bavo not beard wbat bas been settled about tbe Bowan toad faotoryi the last word about it being tbat tbe Bottlers had held a meeting to consider matters, but were unable to do anything as do particulars were before them. I bear of obeese returns coming to band as low as 42s 6d. What about your unsuitable Honie markets again, Messrs the Broken P Spring butter panned oat rtgbt, tboogb. Do yon know, I bave a very strong suspicion tbat the poultry export buiineii wbioh we have been urged to go in for would turn out just tbe same as tbe other export industries. Why should it not? Prices are h'.Rb at Home no doubt in tbe scarce time, just beoause it if the soaroe timo, but once begin to send in a supply from this eida and voa might ao well expect water to rnn up bill as that prioes should remain good ; and we sbould probably find tbat we bad gone to a lot of trouble and expense simply to provide tbe Home consumer with obeap poultry. It seems folly to launoh out into now enterprises of tbat description without reckoning upon a heavy fall in prioes as inevitable. .

It is said tbat one footory will probably bavo another try at pig farming with tbe Wbey, owing to tbe taking il borne plan not working satisfactorily. The matter will, however, be one for tbe suppliers to decide themselves.

There is no enthusiasm that I am aware of being shown in connection with tbe pig industry. It may be want of enterprise or over oaatiousness, or anything else you like lo call it, but those who would have to pay the piper allege that no ooe uas yet buowd them where there is a market that would pay us to produce a large quantity of pork or bacon for. What we oould produoe and what it would pay us to proJuoe are not synonymous. Perhaps we shall get more light on tbe subject shortly. May 20.
