Tbe bon secretary of tbe Hawera Football Club desires to thankfully acknowledge the receipt of a donation to the club of £1 Is by Mr G. T. Bayly, the club's president.

Mr Bate, manager of the West Coast Produce and Agency Co., reports the sale of the freehold and goodwill of tbe Kakaramea Hotel to Mr George Grant, of Hawera.

The Loyal Manaia Lodge tisld their quarterly meeting in the lodge room on Tuesday evening. Therß was a very fair attendance of members present. N.G. Bro. Stoekwell had sufficiently recovered from bis accident to preside. Various accounts were passed for payment. Beoeipts for fortnight were about £27.

A party of twenty-one from Hawera arrived at Dawson's Falls on Sunday to_ climb Mt. Egmont. A start was made at 3 a.m. on Monday, travelling by moonlight, tbe weather being beautiful, and a grand view was obtained during the ascent. Fifteen ol the party reached the top, the time taken being a little over five hours, resting, of course, many times on tbe way up.

At a meeting of crioketera held on Saturday eveaing in the Egmonfc Hotel, an association to be called tbe Taranaki Cricket Association was formed, its object being to look after the interests of cricket in the province. Major Tuke was elected president ; and Dr Westenra, Dr Valentine, Messrs J. Sarten, W. T. Eowlinson, H. Southey, and A. W. Budge vicepresidents. Mr G. W. Harden was elected hon. secretary and treasurer; and the subscription was fixed at £1 Is.

A narrow escane of being left to fate on Mt. Egmont happened to a member of a party on Easter Monday. During the climb, the young man in question bad been left behind with several otbere at Fantbam's Peak, and in his endeavor to reach the summit alone had taken a different route from those in front. Ho was lnißsed, but on tbe return of the others who gained the top was found lying in a ravine in a complete state of exhaustion, having also lost his bat. He was assisted back to camp, and after receiving the best attention possible soon found himself again.

Tbe Manaia Brasß Band has appointed Mr M. R. Varnbam, of Greytown, to tbe bandmastership. Mr Varnham haH for about fifteen years held a Bimilar position in a private band averaging ao active membership during the whole of that time of about nineteen. He is a first class leader, and has played both cornet and clarionet, and is capable of teaching all brass instruments, violin, double basa, clarionet, and flute. He plays the olarionet, flute, and double bass. In addition to this he is capable of teaching tbe theoiy ol music; and has composed music, the quality of which he will no doubt afford the Manaia public an opportunity of judging later on. He has been Church of England choirmaster in Greytown for years, and conductor of an operatic sooiefcy.— -Own Correspondent.

Since Monday's Manaia sports End the splendid exhibition of wrestling by MeLeod, Gardener, and others, it has been tbe sole topic of conversation amongst the spores of tbe district. Tbe outcome will probably be several matches. McLeod is on the spot, and issued a ohalienge to Hogg for a three style contest. Te Aro has telegraphed bis acceptance to Hogg's challenge for a three style contest at an early date. The sports are contemplating to offer a purse, or, if sufficient entries wpre forthcoming, to give two or three substantial prizes to be competed for at an early date for a three style contest. Altogether wrestling is in a very flourishing condition, and tbe next few days will decide what the outcome of all the talk will be.

Mr Albert Bayly, of Omafca, was married on Wednesday to Miss Blackey, who for some time was matron of the New Plymouth hospital. Tbe Taranaki News mentions that a novel departure was made on tbe occasion in the dress of tbe bride. Icatead of the usual elaborate toilette, Mißß Blaokley wore the hospital uniform, and tbe bridesmaids were also dressed in a similar manner — and very pleasing and neat tbey looked, The bridesmaids were the nurses. The newly married couple were driven to the hospital, where a most sumptuous breakfast was awaiting them. Tbe institution had been very prettily decorated for the ocoasion with evergreens and flowers, and tbe presents, which were numerous and costly, were on view. About eighty guests sat down to breakfast, and tbe usual felicitous speeches were made.

An excellent programme for tbe first conoert of the Hawera Ladies' Orchestra, Which is to be given on 6th April, is published in another oolumn. The orchestra will contribute four selections, one being the •• Ko Taku Aroba " valse, a sparkling composition by Mr Higbain, tbe condnctor. The orchestra has been in steady praotioa for a long time past, and the ladies have attained to a high degree of proficiency. Hawera ia to be congratulated on being one of the few towns in tbe oolony that can boast of an entire ladies' orchestra, aod it is to bo hoped that the support necessary for its existence will be atjeorded it. Tbe remainder of the programme consists of vocal and instrumental items by onr leading vocalists, tbe whole forming one oi the best programmes yet placed before a Hawera audience.

At Wednesday's meeting of the Taranaki Education Board, a letter was received from the Toko Committee, reminding the board of tbe necessity of ereoting a residence for tbe teacher. The board recognise the necessity, and will consider the application when the next building grant is allooated. A committee reported that it had revised and rearranged the regulations. It had considered the advisability of framing a new regulation relating to the repairs of residences. It was thought that tbe time had come when teachers should pay a part of tbe expense, and it was proposed to make a deduction from the salaries of teachers. As, however, tbe board had not expressed an opinion on tbe subject, it was considered sufficient to bring it undf-r the notioe of the board. It was decided to notify head teachers that the new tyllabuß for the examination of pnpil teachers is now in force, and will be used for tbe June examination.

At the Wanganui Education Board meeting on Wednesday, Mr Notman was re-elected cbairmau for the current year. It was decided that the name of Henry Boork be placed on the list for pupil teacherehip at Manaia; and that of M. K. Sisley for pupil teacherehip at Nor* manby.

A new price-list is published by Tai Loy, grocer, High-street. The Revs. Hammond and Wood and Messrs Adams and Williamson return thanks to those who voted for them at the late licensing election. Tho returning officer for Patea licensing district publishes results of late polls. Goodwill of borough lease for sale by tender.
