Eltham Co-opetative Dairy * Factory Company, Ltd. A^generaVmeeting of^abareholderß and others interested in the. above -company was" held in Mr Moir'Stdining room on Friday evening, 23rd met. Between twenty and thirty persona were present. Mr Fenny occupied the chair and called upon the secretary to state the business of the meeting. The secretary, Mr Murray, stated that account Bales for oheese had come to hand, and were very satisfactory. He had compared notes with the secretary of the Cardiff factory, and had also conversed with Mr Bobbins, of Stratford, and he - found that all three factories had dono equally well. Id the case of the Cardiff factory at any rate and themselves there was exact equality, 54s being in each case the highest price the cheese had brought in the London market. So they could join their friends there in crowing about having "topped the market." There were qgctain circamstaooes that had been exceptionally favorable to their success financially apart from the cheese tnrned ■ * opt being a good article. Through an Occident to Mr Chong's dam they bad his milk suppliers bringing their milk in the autumn when the milk was at its best for cheese-making. They were near the railway station and had no carting to pay for as in the case of the Cardiff factory. Thoy began with an overdraft of about £1162, and bad now reduced this by £277. If the. cheese on its way to the London market brought the same price as that already sold they ought yet to reoeive £122 in supplementary cheques. The oheese still in the factory for local sale should bring £240. All milk had been paid for at the rate of 3d per gallon of lOlbs, and all working expenses fully paid up to date, and the only liabilities of the company properly due on account of this year's operations were salaries and bank interest to end of oar financial year (31st August) about £82. Deducting these from £639 leaves a net profit of £557. Thiß is only about £3 Bbort of allowing the milk suppliers to •' receive a penny per gal. more for their milk or a total of 4d per gallon. But besides that there would have to be a reserve fnnd. There was a separator to pay for, additions to the factory in view of increased milk supply next year, and other items which were, however, it was to be noted, chargeable to capital acoount,

and which it was bardly fair to themselves

that they should pay for out of this year's profits; and it was proposed to borrow more mouey to pay in part at least *for these additions to tbe buildings and plant of the iaotory. He wished thim farther to "note that at Cardiff aod some other factories 111b of milk was reckoned » gallon, and throughout the season 3d had been paid'for this gallon of 111b. But as lib of milk was worth fully £d, tbe Eltham factory, whilst paying 3d per gallon 1 of 101b wqre really paying at tbe rate of 3£d per gallon of 111b, and this they had dove throughout tbe season. Similarly, if at tbe end of the year the Cardiff factory paid 4d per gallon of lllb and tbe Eltbaui factory 3J d per gallon of 10ib then the aniouut paid per galion by the two factories would be about exactly equal. To make up this amouDt of 3|d per gallon would take £420, and, as shown, they were likely to have £557 of a balance from the year's profits, so that they could pay 3|d per gallon and ourry forward £187 to the reserve fund, provided they had not to pay for separator and additions to bnildings out of their profits. The secretary's statement was thought by the meeting to be very satisfactory. Several shareholders at once gave in their names, "as willing to become security to raise tponey for the building, etc., required;^ Two settlers preseut applied to become- shareholders, and also expressed their willingneFS to stand tbeir share of reß|jonßibiiity" : ';n borrowing the capital required. Tije chairmaH said that the success of tbe company was due to their being united, and that there wan no fear of their . nltimate prosperity if they all helped forwnrd tbe progress of tbe company and Stuck together. The secretary paid that praise was due to tbe chairman for the time aud paiue be hid given to the interests of the company ; and indeed also to tho executive commated; und he lflt sure that not a shilling of tbe (Joaipuny's money had beeu wasted. Along wjilV the acoount sales he bad received fr letter from Mr Kowin (leitf-r rend), which, he thought, showed that at the present .time there was not much temptation to forsake a cheese factory for • butier factory. He uiighc mention in regard to the Glangow market) that it cost more to send cheese there, 56s in Glasgow Whs only t-qnal to 54s in London, After various mailers of business connected with the factory had been talked overdue meeting broke up ; it bt-ing agreed t'iac the eeoretary should cocamuinctte With the Bank, and then call another meeting of shareholders.
