THE MESS-PORK INDUSTRY.

Me. Vecht, of the Inter-marine Supply Company, arrived in Hawera last evening on business connected with the starting of the above mentioned industry. The Stae was the first paper in New Zealand to give information to the public respecting the probabilities of the firm starting business here, and naturally we take great interest in the subject, the more so because it is of such essential importance that an industry which is pretty certain to assume large proportions in a dairying district should get a good start. We are, therefore, glad to learn from Mr Yecht that he represents a demand which will start a factory in any district which will give him 2000 pigs a week the year round ; and that the experimental shipment he made a few months ago has turned out so well that there is no question as to the quality of New Zealand pork being all he desires. He simply took a few pigs off skim milk and grass, gave them a fortnight's cortiteeding at "Waitara, turned them into mess-pork, and the report is that the article is all that can be desired. From observation, he thinks that North Island pork is better for his purposes than South Island. The only question now is that of supply. For the present he fears it is inadequate, but if the price to be offered is sufficient no doubt that difficulty will coon be overcome. However, in the meantime he is starting works at Ngahauranga, Welling©afc.and whenever this district can send 2000 pigs a week to W aitara, works will be erected there. A supply is now wanted, and on Tuesday next Mr Vecht will be in Hawera prepared to talk business with farmers, in fact 10 enter into contracts. Only one thing is required by him: that the supply shall be regular, and the feeding what he aske for—that ia to say, the last fortnight on grain or beans or similar hard food. This is essential to the success of his process, and unless farmers are prepared to keep absolute faith with him on this point business cannot be done.
