RE.BOTjDING O_V EAII-WA.Y i STATION.
(FBOM OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.) A speoial meeting of the Ealeigh Town Board was held on Monday, 19th instant, present—Messrs W. T. Snell (obairman). Pearce, S. Joll, T. Elliot, W. Lawrence, J. McKoy, S. Nicbolls. A petition to the Bailway Oommis. sioners was drafted by Mr F. Bluck, the town clerk, praying the eommuswnersto erect the station on a more suitable site, and suggesting block 89 (the property of tbe railway), between Domet and QueenBtreets, as moat convenient. They also prayed the commissioners to build a gentlemen's aB well aB a ladies' waiting room in tbe new station, as owing to much increased settlement north ot Waitara many passengers had long distances to journey previous to travelling by the trains. The petition gave the following amongst other reasons for not using tbe present Bite for a station:—mat it wbb on tbe seaward side of the townshin, thuß causing much inconvenience and' danger in traversing the level orossiog in Queen.street, where the view of the approaching engine was hidden by tne Btationmaster'B house. Several casualties I had narrowly escaped occurring from this cause. That it closed Domet-street to the
Tho petition further showed that application had been made to shift the station and refused on the ground of expense, which plea did not now exist. Tbe board were unanimous in sending the petition, and the Waitara Harbour Board conour in its clauses. Mr Snell and Mr S. Nichols waited upon Mr E. M. Smith, M.H.8., at Sentry Hill with a oopy of tbe petition this mornin- in accordance with a resolution of the board, and received every attention irom him on the question. No time has been lost in the matter, .and the requirements of the township were pointed out to Mr. Buxton, Traffic Manager, on Saturday last, who promised to represent them to tbe Oommissioners. . Presont station duties are being performed by Mr R. Pattle (not Tattle), our energetio stationmaster in the dumping shed, placed at his disposal by the Waitara Harbor Board. Mr Pattle and Mr Clare had a very bard taßk to tackle in shifting the carriages and van on the line, time not allowing of either going away for assistance. Great credit is due to them. Mr Pattle strained his arm severely in his efforts to move the trucks. June 18th.
